Bipolar disorder, known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in energy, mood, activity levels, and the ability to perform daily tasks. In the U.S., 44 million people live with mental illness; and one out of every five people struggle with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
