Book Review, “Professional Career Paths”
While reading “Professional Career Paths,” I couldn’t help but wish there was a book like this available when I was in high school. Primarily designed as a guide to help high school and first year college students, thoughtful questions are asked and answered by a myriad of diverse professionals. The reader learns “to visualize how their background fits certain characteristics of professionals so they become inspired to pursue a defined career path.” Well put by the author, Ronald Holmes, president of The Holmes Education Post, an education-focused, weekly, internet newspaper.
Each occupation explored is linked to one of the 16 national career clusters, supported by definitions of the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium. The question and answer format left me wanting to learn more about each profession and the multitude of career options was impressive and all-encompassing. From farming to business management, architecture to transportation, the insight and basic information garnered from these professionals was very informative, practical and often times, influential.
Holmes has his own extensive career history. It would have been equally as enlightening to read about his background, work/life experiences and education. It would have also helped this curious mind if he had revealed his methods for choosing the people he interviewed.
“Professional Career Paths” is something every school should make available in the guidance office. Curious, motivated students will surely pick it up and after reading, have new insight into the job market and be better prepared to explore their chosen career path.
