Is American Standard English irrelevant?

Is there a difference in the words their, there and they’re? You bet there is and whether you are writing or speaking, employers are expecting you to know the difference and use the words correctly. This is an example of what we call American Standard English (ASE). ASE adheres to fixed standards of grammar in writing and speaking. In listening to popular news stations, talk shows and sports analysts, however, we find that some components of ASE are constantly misused. This leads to three critical questions: Is American Standard English dead or irrelevant? Do employers have expectations about proper grammar? How can high school and college students learn proper grammar in this era?

Contrary to popular belief, American Standard English is not irrelevant. Whether you are seeking employment or applying for college, students need good grammar skills. Lacking these skills could impact their career trajectory. Regardless of whether they are writing or speaking, companies are expecting employees to have a good command of the English language. In fact, if you make some common grammar mistakes, managers making employment decisions might never let your resumé see the light of day.

Ronald Holmes’ next book titled, “A Business Communications & Grammar Book for High School and College Students” provides readers with solutions to common grammar mistakes. Further, the book provides practical examples of how to effectively write a resumé, letter of application, letter of intent for college and apply for a job using acceptable business practices.

With a projected publication date of December 2021, this book also educates students on the concept of financial literacy so they can effectively manage their money. To meet the needs of homeschoolers, this book will serve as a reference guide for an online curriculum on Business Communications and Grammar with emphasis on preparing students for college and careers. Stay tuned for the release of this book.
