Why must we trust in God?

As human nature, men and women put their trust in material things such as automobiles, appliances, cell phones and computers; but these things often fail us. Our bodies and people will fail us too. In our Wednesday Night Bible Study at First Timothy Baptist Church on November 15, the critical question was: Why must we trust in God?

Utilizing the book, Beyond the Sunday Sermon, Dr. Ronald Holmes’ message highlighted three key points on why we must trust in God. They included (1) magnifying the mercy of God, (2) a testimony over triumph in troubles, and (3) confessing confidence in the Lord. Dr. Holmes said we must trust God because of his amazing grace, favor and tender mercy for trouble will come and go in our life. There is no course you can take to outrun or escape trouble. In fact, the bible says in Psalm 118:8, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” The bible also says in Psalm 118:1,“O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: because his mercy endureth forever.” God is the only one we can trust in our life. “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness” (Lamentations 3: 22–23).

In point two, Dr. Holmes said David was faced with a troubling situation of fighting Goliath, a much stronger and bigger man. David was able to defeat Goliath because of his faith and trust in God. As we experience triumph over our trials and tribulations, we will have a testimony to inspire others to trust in God. What God did for one person, he can do the same for another person. Thus, when we go through some tests in life, we will be able to tell people about how we were able to overcome the tests, said Holmes.

For point three, Dr. Holmes said we must confess, trust and place our confidence in the Lord rather than man (Psalm 118:8-9). With man, salvation is impossible; but with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). David defeated Goliath which appeared to be impossible. He knew the battle was the Lord’s and not his own (1 Samuel 17: 45-47). David knew he could do all things through the Lord who strengthened him (Philippians 4:13). He knew that “greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). As a blessing, all we need in this world is to “trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways, acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

In short, Dr. Holmes highlighted the reasons we must trust in God. God has all power in heaven and earth (Matthew 28:18). He is “the way, truth and the life (John 14:6).
